After days of packing and re-packing, it was finally time to leave. It was a stressful time for me since I’ve never been on an airplane before and my first flight would be 20 hours long (with a short layover in Korea). I strategically packed my carry-on with snacks, medication, my iPad, a blanket and a neck pillow. I wanted to cover all of my bases so I packed everything I could think of.
I did not realize that when going through the security check at the airport, it was necessary to separate your electronics from your bag. I was scrambling to place them into separate bins and to take off my shoes at the same time. I was sweating by the time I want past the metal detectors. The real struggle happened when I had to place the items in the backpack. I realized that I packed it so carefully that the two seconds they gave us wouldn’t be enough for me to place the items back in. I ended up carrying my blanket and pillow on the plane.
Getting on the flight, I was really afraid that my back would hurt (especially since I recently got some back injuries in a car accident). To my relief, the pain didn’t occur in my back. The pain was in my knees! The small leg room caused my legs to be in a bent position for the whole flight and it was quite painful. Bathroom breaks were a welcomed event as it was a chance to stretch out my legs for a few minutes.
Ascending and descending gave me feelings that were quite familiar, but definitely not comfortable. I likened it to the “Tower of Terror” at Disneyland but slower. The random turbulence was enough to shake me awake from my drug-induced sleep.
The airplane food was surprisingly delicious and came with dessert. That was quite unexpected, especially since everyone told me that airplane food would be terrible. They feed us three times and constantly kept us hydrated through of the duration of the flight.
I spent the majority of the flight sleeping with intermissions of watching TV. I was able to finish “Winter’s tale” and “Life of Pi” and I watched an episode each of “Family Guy” and “Top Gear”. It was quite enjoyable. I didn’t expect such a wide variety and it was complimentary.
During our short layover in Korea, I was determined to obtain some Korean currency as proof that was in Korea. I purchased a small apple and mango yogurt drink with $5 USD and received 1200 won back. It will be a welcomed addition to my “money collection”.
Overall, my first flight wasn’t the horrible experience I was expecting. I was pleasantly surprised.
